Jim Larkin

James Larkin, commonly known as Jim Larkin and sometimes, “Big Jim”, was born on January 21, 1876. He was brought up in Liverpool, England to a humble background. Because his parents were poor and did not have much, Jim grew up in slums. He was not lucky to receive much formal education because of his family’s state. Therefore, James Larkin had to work tough manual jobs to provide for his family. Because of his hard work, he became a foreman at the docks.

James was a socialist who did not waver in his feelings of unfair treatment to workers. His trade unionism earned him a full-time commitment when he joined the National Union of Dock Laborers, NUDL in 1905.

The world is full of diversity, and therefore, people having different ways of doing things; Jim did not fight for worker’s rights in the shadows. He used the militant strikes methods. However, James Larkin’s methods were considered unacceptable to NUDL. He was, therefore, transferred to Dublin in 1907.

There, Jim formed the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union with the aim of bringing together all Irish workers, irrespective of their skills. James wanted to unite them all under one organization.

The Irish Labor Party soon came into being, still under Jim Larkin. The party organized several strikes in Dublin. James believed that if no action was taken to address workers’ rights, then they had to take actions such as strikes. The most prominent one which came to be the most significant strike was the Dublin Lockout; 1913. It involved more than 100,000 workers and went roughly eight months. The First World War soon broke out, and James Larkin was against the fighting. He led anti-war demonstrations in Dublin. Jim then went to the United States of America, where he raised funds against the British.

James Larkin became convicted in 1920. The charges against him were criminal anarchy and communism. Nonetheless, he got a pardon on the charges in 1923 and was deported to Ireland. While in Ireland, he did not stop. His drive to advocate for workers’ rights still kept him going, and so he formed and organized the Workers Union of Ireland. This led to recognition from Communist International in 1924.

Apart from being a socialist and activist, James Larkin was also a family man. He was married to Elizabeth brown in 1903 and had four sons.
